The Chevrolet Vega was a subcompact van built by Common Motors from 1970 until 1977. It was conceived as the replacement for the ill-fated Corvair. The economical four-passenger van competed with the Ford Pinto, the American Motors Gremlin and the Volkswagen Beetle. The Vega was available as a notchback sedan, a Kammback wagon and a hatchback coupe, and with a Panel Definitive delivery wagon oppose style. Despite problems with protest rust, leaking fuel tanks and a attitude to burn oil, the Vega was a common pattern, selling 2,154,434 units.
Engine
The Series 14100 Chevrolet Vega featured an inline, 8-valve, four-cylinder, "2300" 139.98-cubic-inch (2.3-liter) engine. The overhead-valve Engine had mechanical valve lifters, an aluminum block and a cast-iron cylinder imagination. It was longitudinally mounted, with five leading bearings on the crankshaft and a unmarried overhead cam. Its shorter stroke helped it cause 110 hp at 5,600 rpm with 107 foot-pounds of torque at 4,800 rpm. The 2,639-pound Cosworth Vega had upgraded torque-arm front suspension and lower axle gears of 3.73:1. It would top elsewhere at 112 mph and bang from 0 to 60 mph in 12.3 seconds.
The Vega featured independent ball-joint with coil-spring front suspension, with rear four-link coil springs. The Vega was the beginning GM-built machine to propoundment principles front-wheel CD brakes. It had rear self-adjusting expanding drum brakes. The automobile had a semi-floating axle type with a hypoid differential with a rear-end ratio of 2.53:1. The cooling method used a centrifugal drool pump with a tube and centre radiator.
Cosworth Vega
In 1975 and 1976, the Vega was offered in a limited-production performance narration with a Cosworth Twin-Cam engine built by Cosworth Engineering in Great Britain. The hand-built four-cylinder, 16-valve, 122-cubic-inch engine featured an aluminum block, Shod pistons and crankshaft with electronic fuel injection. Chassis
The H-body platform Vega used either a sample three-, four- or five-speed jotter gearbox operated by an 8-inch single-plate, dry-disc clutch.
